For the first time this weekend I ran into a rather common Wordpress error: WordPress database error: [Can't open file: 'wp_comments.MYI' (errno: 144)]. I also noticed this morning that Matt Cutts is having the same issue. It may seem scary, however, it’s really simple to fix.
To do so, just log into your MySQL database admin area. More than likely that’s done though your webstie’s control panel and phpMyAdmin.
Once in there, locate your blog’s database and bring up the main screen. The main screen is the one that shows you the listing of all the tables. Locate the the wp_comments table in the list and select the checkbox next to it. At the bottom of that page there is a drop down menu that says ‘With selected:’. Chose ‘Repair table’ and repair it. That should do it.
Your comments should come back to life and all should be well again.

Yesterday I was helping a reader solving his Wordpress error, so I thought I might as well write an entry, just in case we all encounter this in the future. If you ever run across this error (or warning) in your Wordpress with the message saying:
Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at //home/htdocs/wordpress/wp-config.php:1) in /home/htdocs/wordpress/wp-login.php on line 12
or something similar, chances are you have messed up your wp-config.php leaving some unnecessary spaces inside.
Solution
- Download your wp-config.php down via FTP (Edit directly if you have SSH access)
- Open wp-config with your favourite editor, and remove all spaces before “<?php” and after “?>”
- Upload and replace.
You are adviced to make backup of any files you edited.

I was at the New York Times last week and one of the things that blew me away were how many WordPress blogs they’re running. I had seen 2-3, but it turns out they have almost 25 running on both sides of the paywall and they’re going to be doing even more with WordPress as time goes on.
There’s more good news: they’re hiring. Khoi Vinh writes “A thorough knowledge of weblog publishing software, especially WordPress, is required.” Sounds like a great gig for whoever gets it. Bringing things full circle, Khoi’s site is one of my favorites and an inspriation for the new WordPress.org.
