Archived; click post to view.
Excerpt: I was at the New York Times last week and one of the things that blew me away were how many WordPress blogs they’re running. I had seen 2-3, but it turns out they have almost 25 running on both sides of the paywall and they’re going to be doing even more with WordPress as time goes on. There’s more good news: they’re hiring. Khoi Vinh writes “A thorough knowledge of weblog publishing software, especially WordPress, is required.” Sounds like a great gig for whoever gets it. Bringing things full circle, Khoi’s site is one of my favorites and an inspriation…

To avoid the same disaster from happening to your own blog, you can try the tips below to make your WordPress blog more secure, at least from the view of script kiddies. Tip 1 :Remove WordPress ‘version string’ in your theme files Go to WordPress dashboard, click on presentation -> edit themes -> header.php Find and remove this. bloginfo(‘version’) Save the file. Explanation: Hide the version number of your WordPress such that it will be hard for hacker to find security loopholes for the specific version of WordPress. Tip 2 lace empty ‘index.html’ file in…

Archived; click post to view.
Excerpt: The problem. Many WordPress users use custom fields to display a thumbnail on their blog home page. Of course, this is a nice solution, but how about automatically retrieving the first image from a post and using it as a thumbnail? The solution. This hack is quite easy to implement: Open the functions.php file in your theme. Paste this code in. Don’t forget to specify a default image on line 10 (in case a post of yours does not have an image). view source print? 01 function catch_that_image() { 02 global $post, $posts; 03 $first_img = ”; 04 ob_start(); 05 ob_end_clean(); 06 $output = preg_match_all(‘/<img.+src=[\'"]([^\'"]+)[\'"].*>/i’, $post->post_content, $matches); 07 $first_img = $matches [1] [0]; 08 09 …
